DID YOUR TEACHER TELL YOU???
From 1850s, Lincoln was eager, even desperate, to get Douglas to debate.
Ever since Douglas's pet "Dred Scott" decision was made public, Douglas was on speaking tours to boast of Dread as the perfect and now official mandate that would forever stop the "agitation" of slavery.
Douglas, of course, was lying.
As Lincoln pointed out, oh, 400 times in various places and ways, Dred Scott (with Kansas Act) was the machinery, the designed machinery, to spread slavery to the Pacific, to the "North South East and West.
And DOuglas was helping Jeff Davis push this fraud on to the publics as a noble solution.
Lincoln was desperate to counter Douglas's lies -- face to face, Douglas was eager to, and already helping Jeff Davis spread slavery.
Lincoln -- again, and again, and again, correctly accused Douglas of being part of the "machinery" by Jeff Davis et al, to spread slavery by Kansas Act and Dred Scott, is the fault of our text book publishers --
And worse, the fault of most of our "historians" who likewise skim over that most central of all facts,
1) that Dred Scott and Kansas Act were the machinery to spread slavery "North South East and West.
2) And that Stephen A Douglas, as Lincoln aid and explained repeatedly, was central to everything that followed.
3) That is why Lincoln pushed so hard to get the Lincoln Douglas debates.
4) That is why Douglas went hard and ugly re "Lincoln wants your daughters to sleep with Ni**ers" when he finally agreed to debates.
Nothing else comes close -- yet we do not teach that as basic.
