Douglas was so popular -- that abolitionist (supposed abolitionist) Horace Greeley tried his best to stop Lincoln from even being on the ballot of Senate.

Douglas spoke more often, in more places to more people than anyone else of his time -- he drew the biggest crowds. Douglas was loud, dramatic -- hateful. He trashed anyone that questioned him Lincoln until Gettysburg
WHY LINCOLN FOLLOWED DOUGLAS AROUND
Douglas was on a speaking tour -- for Jeff Davis, as it turns out, to praise the Dred Scott decision -- a profoundly important fact most historians do not bother to mention, The speaking tour for Davis--- praising the Dred Scott decision --which is exactly when and why Lincoln wanted to expose Douglas for his adoration of Davis and the Dred Scott decision.

Varina apparently did not like Douglas, claimed he smelled so bad that she hoped his new wife would open those tall windows-- in the mansion Douglas just built for his new young "hot" looking wife.

Douglas threw such lies at Lincoln -- no matter if Lincoln was there or not.

Douglas used such attacks on others, since 1850. He was the master of making anyone look as if they wanted your daughters to sleep with _____ etc.
Lincoln of course already knew what Douglas would lie about and insult him with.
Lincoln also knew why.
Years before - in the 1840's -- Lincoln and DOuglas were lawyers in the same part of Illinois, and at times not only travelled together, but slept in the same bed.
The "hotels" at the time were sometimes more like shacks, with one bed for 4 our five people. Sometimes paying guest just slept on the floor. The food was almost unable.
At that time -- Douglas was like Lincoln -- slavery is an evil that corrupts everything, and must end eventually. Start the ending b stopping the spread.
But Douglas suddenly flipped-- famously flipped -after become friends with Jeff Davis. Particularly Douglas trashed Kansas Act - but days later, Douglas flipped to be theSenator who personally pushed it through -with Davis direction
Douglas and Davis personally took Kansas Act for President Pierce to sign. Lincoln and others knew exactly why Douglas flipped to Davis over night.

Frederick Douglass knew - as did Lincoln -- that Stephen A Douglas since 1854, was the man who, more than anyone else incited hatred for the black man.
Douglas got crowds to yell at Lincoln "Down with Niggers." Lincoln had to wait for the yelling to subside, before he could respond.
Douglas arrival in any city could be news for days before and after his arrival. Always Douglas degraded the black race --and then lied to say he did not care if slavery spread or not.

Douglas arranged for women to accompany him on his train (supplied by the man who would run against Lincoln for President in 1864-- Georg McClellan). In Charleston Ill the women arrived on Douglas's train -- and went with him to stage -- as brass band played

We all would know that -- if our history teachers were worth a damn. Douglas used that phrase -- "No man but a white man" in other speeches.
Crowds yelled "DOWN WITH NIGGERS" Exactly what Douglas knew they would -- and wanted them to yeall.
That was Douglas's goal -- cheering crowds -- make crowds think Lincoln wants your daughters to "sleep with" N------
Not everyone cheered, but hate mongers getting cheering crowds is 90% of the battle.

Lincoln did lose this election for senate - and only won White House because 3 "pro spread of slavery" fools ran against him. Most white people still hated or feared black men in the election.
Lincoln won Presidency even though slave states refused to let him on the ballot, or did not count his votes.

Why the change?
Why did Douglas flip 180 on that, and why flip on Kansas act almost over night?
Because it got him power -- and crowds.
Why incite crowd to yell "Down with Negroes" - -- only Douglas never used the word Negro according to the stenographer of the debates -- he used the word N word.
Quincy newspapers reported Douglas used that word -- the N word--with a special kind of hate. He almost spit the word out.
WHY --
Why pump up hate-- ? Because Douglas knew that 80% -- a stunning four out of five, people in much of Illinois hated and feared the black race.
Hate = political gold. That equaled power and attention. Douglas was an egomaniac -he craved cheering crowds.
This was the best way to get cheering crowds.
This was the best way to get power.
Illinois made it a crime -- a crime -- for blacks to move into Illinois in 1858. Illinois also nearly voted to be a slave state in 1818.
We omit entirely the vulgar and hateful attacks against Lincoln. Yet that is the ony reason Douglas won the Senate race, defeating Lincoln.
It was not just Douglas that attacked Lincoln as "Niggerlover" or such nonsense. Douglas newspapers - thousands of them -- also claimed Lincoln was trying to get white women to sleep with black men.

Those who spoke of "equality of the races" were still being attacked, even killed by the time of the famous debates.
Douglas, Stephen A Douglas, was famous for getting crowds, and the nation to fear and hate blacks. He drew the biggest crowns in the US, more than abolitionist, more than Presidents.
He was dramatic-- for example he would arrive in his own railroad car, and be carreid by his supporters, with a brassband playing.
Horrace Greely said DOuglas was the best public speaker in the nation -- at a time when great speakers were common.

The official stenographer of the debates said Douglas never or rarely used the term "Negro." Douglas use the term "Nigger."

The Supreme Court -- in Dred Scot decision -- officially defined blacks as "not human being." Stephen A Douglas was on a "national tour" of sorts to brag about Dred Scott decision
by the time Lincoln could get Douglas to debate.
In Kansas, Jeff Davis had, since 1856, 2000 paid Texas men invade terrorize and later kill to spread slavery.
That group of men Davis sent was the second group - Davis sent the first group, a much small group, in 1854.

By the way -- the same year, as archivist discovered-- someone gave Stephen A Douglas a slave plantation in Mississippi after he passed Kansas Act (with Atchison). There were over 150 slaves on Douglas's plantation.
Douglas "forgot" to mention that in or after the debates. Most people alive at the time were well aware Douglas flipped to push Kansas Act -- to curry favor with Jeff Davis.
But it was not until rather recently we know by paperwork, from DOuglas's attorney . Douglas was given much more than a pat on the head by Davis. Someone gave him a slave plantation -- 5 or 10 million dollars worth.

Douglas claimed he was not there that day. Not only was Douglas there that day, it's likely Douglas (as Sgt. At Arms of the Senate) let Preston Brooks in.
Preston was not allowed on the floor at all -- and Senate doors were always locked from the inside during debates like this.
Only the Sgt.At Arms could allow the doors to open. That was Stephen A Douglas.
Furthermore, Douglas already told Sumner the day before, during a break in the first day of Sumner's amazing speech. Douglas told Sumner he "should be beaten like a dog" for the way Sumner talked.
Sumner was insulting, yes, and every word of it was true, every word of it was about those who used the Senate to enslave torture and kill to spread slavery.
